ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter I showed that within Riverview black young people have negotiated a contingent form of inclusion. Here the meaning of “race” as a divisive social parameter is denied. I also showed that there exists a complex process of social definition whereby young people of Vietnamese origin are excluded from the dialogues occurring locally and black people from areas outside of Riverview are also seen as a stigmatized group. In this chapter I will show how the local identities I have referred to as “neighbourhood nationalism” become violated by the use of racist materials by young whites.
