ABSTRACT
Like other cultural traits, American naming practices derived from Europe and were fundamentally no different from their models. There were significant minor variations, however, in first-name choice and usage, while the assimilation of first and second names of immigrants (including Blacks) to American norms was a special feature. More recently, some American trends have impacted back on to European practice.
