The republic of Azerbaijan: notes on the state borders in the past and the present

The province of Azerbaijan is a term of the Middle Ages. It is used in contemporary sources (Mir Yahya Qazvini, Iskander bek Munshi, etc.) in reference to the whole of Azerbaijan: although the province has been very variable in its geographical connotations over time, the whole is generally held as consisting of the northern (Republic of Azerbaijan) and the southern (Iranian Azerbaijan).
