ABSTRACT

The John A Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii converted from its traditional curriculum to problem-based learning for the entire incoming class of 56 students in 1989. We adopted the McMaster model of small group, self-directed, tutorial-based learning. That process of change was accomplished in 15 months. This case history will focus on the major events in the chronology of change, and the strategy and tactics which were successful in our situation.
