ABSTRACT
If rioting has dominated our view of political protest, the state’s response to riot has had an even more profound impact on our perception of public order policing. The term has become almost synonymous with police in riot gear battling with rioters. This vision of policing lends credibility to the more fundamental and profoundly worrying allegation that Britain is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
