ABSTRACT
Five broad groups of calderas may be recognized, each with different origins. Four of the groups are dominated by collapse: on basaltic shields; on stratovolcanoes; on complex volcanic fields; or as a result of ashflows. The fifth, and most recently
recognized, group is formed by debris avalanches and, alone in the genre, always displays notably asymmetrical outlines.
