ABSTRACT

The example described in this chapter is a capability-focused programme designed from scratch and tested as a pilot with ‘real’ students. Although the Work-based Learning programme of the University of Leeds is a small part of the University’s portfolio (but targeted to grow substantially), for the students taking part it represents the whole of their experience leading to full university awards at any level from Certificate of Higher Education (Level 1) to full honours and masters degrees. The programme is the nearest example in the book to a complete work-based capability programme. It is a student led partnership between the University and the student’s work-place focused on the development of student capability through problem-based projects related to the field of work. Features include learning contracts, peer support, cross-discipline work, opportunities for advanced standing and assessments based on student defined final products and critical self-review.
