ABSTRACT

The military totalitarianism that has revealed itself during the Algiers coup is the direct product of the “counterrevolutionary”2 war in colonial society. There is no question of theorizing it here. I only want to (1) identify it as an authentic totalitarianism, unlike the movements that the Communist party or the left irrelevantly denounce as “fascist” at every turn; and (2) situate its position and identify its importance among recent events in Algeria. What were the forces present in the Algiers coup? What is the dynamic of their development?
