ABSTRACT
The received view that the actions of the urban poor can be characterized as prompted by material needs has been strongly criticized in the recent literature on social movements. Social movements have been conceptualized as “spaces for the production of meaning” and, especially in the Latin American context of democratic transitions, have been afforded a rôle creating a new political culture and forms of citizenship. In this chapter I have focused on the specific aspect of land rights.
