ABSTRACT

Teachers are subject matter experts. When they teach their particular discipline it may seem that students do not appreciate the knowledge they are gaining. However, there comes a point when they have to sanction the expertise gained by the learner. What happens when the teacher is not confident of the ability of a learner, even when the learner has ‘passed’? When the ability of the learner is formally recognized, he or she has the right to exercise ownership of the knowledge and skills gained as a newly sanc-tioned expert This chapter examines some of the issues of ownership of knowledge and the increasing uses of technology to pass on knowledge.
