ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the trainee through the complex and often emotive subject of special educational needs (SEN). It shows clearly the role of the Code of Practice (DfEE, 1994) and how the more recent Green Paper, Excellence for All Children (1998) will affect schools and pupils with SEN. The chapter clearly demonstrates both ends of the spectrum, from pupils with physical and mental disabilities to the gifted pupil. Trainees are provided with suggestions and help in dealing with SEN in their classroom. What SEN are and who is responsible for them are explained, as are the roles of those dealing with SEN in the school. Trainees are given advice on the mechanisms for identifying and assessing SEN. They are also shown ways in which they can help improve access to learning for SEN pupils. The chapter concludes with some words of advice for the trainee.
