ABSTRACT

This chapter directs the trainee to aspects of assessment, recording and reporting that will need to be developed in order to reach the standards laid down in Circular 4/98 (DfEE, 1998a). The trainee is introduced to the concepts of assessment, including the types of assessment they will be involved in. These include discussion on SATs, GCSEs, GNVQs and A levels, as well the whole concept of formative and summative assessment procedures. Key terms used in assessment are considered, as are their implications in recording and reporting the assessments made. Assessment is examined and explained from the everyday classroom perspective, including marking and homework, to the wider perspective of statutory examinations. The trainee is then introduced to the importance of recording and reporting assessment to a variety of audiences.
