ABSTRACT

The sources of information used for making these comparisons will be secondary sources. Apart from the time and cost limitations on collecting primary material, there have been scattered research projects which can now be brought together in order to provide adequate information on the effects of different planning regimes. The starting point for many of these studies is Containment of urban England by Hall et al. (1973), particularly Chapter 12 of Volume 2. This provides the intellectual structure for the two following chapters on California and Britain.
