ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of group project work with first-year topics for engineering students. The particularly novel feature of the approach described is the fact that only staff from outside the engineering school teach the programme.

Students participate in a range of activities designed to develop the written and oral communication skills necessary to succeed in collaborative project work and subsequent employment.

The chapter describes the students’ initial attitude to the topic and approach, outlines the communications component and offers some evidence of successful outcomes resulting in inspiration.
