ABSTRACT

It would be hard to overstate the constitutive role played by overt and covert racial dynamics historically and currently in the construction of ‘official knowledge,’ teaching, evaluation, public policies, popular culture, identities, economic divisions, and the state itself in the United States and many other nations. An understanding of education that does not recognize this lives in a world divorced from reality, for race is not an ‘add-on’.
