ABSTRACT
This chapter briefly traces the historical development of Access education 1 with its diverse schemes and routes to offer programmes of study to those ‘who might be excluded, disadvantaged, delayed or otherwise deterred by a need to qualify for entry in more conventional ways’ (Parry, 1996: 3).
