ABSTRACT

This previously healthy woman, a smoker for more than 10 years (one pack per day), experienced her first seizure (tonic-clonic) at the age of 32 years. Subsequently, she developed complex partial seizures, with features suggesting an origin in the dominant temporal lobe, at a frequency of three a day. Several anticonvulsive drug regimens (valproate, valproate plus phenytoin, lamotrigine) did not control the seizures. In parallel to the epilepsy, the patient developed severe loss of episodic memory and mood lability with a predominance of depression and – later on – verbal aggression.
