ABSTRACT
A woman with therapy-resistant epilepsy was referred for genetic counseling. Her first male child had moderate mental retardation. The patient wanted to know the cause of her epilepsy while hoping that this would lead to a better treatment resulting in seizure freedom. Her husband was more concerned about the risk of epilepsy and mental retardation to subsequent offspring.
