ABSTRACT

Weight loss, either through dietary means or

by bariatric surgery will significantly reduce

the severity of OSA, but the effect is variable

and therefore it is important to re-assess

patients after weight loss. Recent data from

the Swedish Obese Subjects study have shown

a marked reduction in sleep apnoea

symptomatology in obese subjects 2 years after

surgically-induced weight loss compared with

controls. However, complete cure of all sleep-

disordered breathing with weight loss is rare:

many patients have significant residual disease

that warrants further treatment.42
