ABSTRACT

Given the availability of two drugs with different

modes of action, it is inevitable that they will be

tried in combination, as is commonly the case

with drugs for hypertension and diabetes. One

small placebo-controlled study suggested that

there was no additional benefit to adding orlistat

after 1 year of sibutramine treatment,32 but a

formal study combining the two treatments has

not been carried out. At present this

combination is contraindicated in the license of

both drugs, and is not recommended by any of

the published guidelines on obesity treatment

Perhaps of more clinical relevance will be a

carefully controlled study of the sequential use of

sibutramine and orlistat.
