ABSTRACT

Most of us in our teaching careers meet ‘school refusers’, students who prefer to stay at home rather than go to school, but often we don’t realize that the problem is anchored in the home, or in the relationship between the home and the school, at least as much as in the school alone. Here we discriminate between ‘school refusers’, who remain home and/or with their parents, that is, parents know where they are and ‘truants’, who may be with friends and/or roaming the city or countryside, that is, parents may not know where their children are.
