ABSTRACT

It has been a long-held belief that the immune system has the potential to eradicate cancers in patients. We are all aware of the immune system’s power to control most infectious organisms that invade the human body, to recognize and reject foreign tissues, and, most importantly for this chapter, to be stimulated to recognize and remember a particular protein/antigen so that, upon re-exposure, a more potent and rapid response is generated. This last property of the immune system has resulted in the global use of vaccines against infectious organisms and subsequent dramatic reductions in the mortality from them.
