ABSTRACT

The estimated set – up cost of the UK e – university project, announced in February 2000 by the government (Times Higher Education Supplement, 18 February 2000), is £200 million over two years. Half of the funds for this are coming from the government and the other half from the private sector, such as telecommunications and publishing industries. These education–commerce links, forming new kinds of universities, are now happening across the globe with the aim of delivering online distance courses.
