ABSTRACT

Most cholesterol in human plasma is carried

bound to apoB100, contributing about 50% of

the mass of each particle. The primary role of

LDL is the transport of both dietary and

endogenously synthesized cholesterol to

peripheral tissues for use in the manufacture of

cell membranes and steroid hormones. The

cholesterol content of atherosclerotic plaques is

largely derived from LDL, but these

lipoproteins may need to be oxidatively

damaged in order to be atherogenic.
