ABSTRACT

Barbara Horgan, an aspiring actress and student at Columbia College in New York City, began working for the New York City Ballet in 1953. She became George Balanchine’s personal assistant, working closely alongside the ballet master until his death in 1983. He bequeathed a number of his ballets to Horgan, who headed the Balanchine Trust (which oversees the dissemination of Balanchine’s choreography around the world) from 1983 through 2000. She is now a trustee and general director.
