ABSTRACT

In a statement written by Merce Cunningham in 1994, entitled “Four Events That Have Led to Large Discoveries,” he describes the major phases of his career as a choreographer:1 his collaboration with the composer John Cage, which led to the disassociation of dance and music that is a key element of Cunningham’s dance aesthetic; his use of chance operations as part of his choreographic process; his work with video and film; and his exploration of computer technology.
