ABSTRACT

As we said at the start of the last chapter, these two chapters cover overlapping topics. In a sense they both relate to religion in some way but because they overlap we have had to explore the manner in which we are using the terms in this book. In the first part of this chapter, therefore, we will highlight the differences that we see between religion and Christianity – although the same discussion would hold good for Islam and the other institutionalized religions. In the third chapter we looked at Fowler’s work on faith development and we suggested that in its higher stages it pointed beyond Christianity; it is this that we will develop in the second part of this chapter. Here we will suggest that spirituality underlies religion itself and we will also explore the process of learning spirituality, especially in relation to ageing.
