ABSTRACT

Musical tradition is constantly invented and reinvented in response to social, political and cultural circumstances of a given time and place. It involves the enactment and interpretation of tradition as well as its recreation. Here I bring together the themes and subjects represented in previous chapters in order to reflect on the identities constructed, negotiated and actively engaged by women in flamenco. This final chapter examines the realms of identity construction, aesthetics and emotional expression as they are negotiated by women flamenco singers. I revisit the variously positioned ideological issues that inform both the performance of flamenco and the discourse in and about flamenco, and explore how these issues are articulated within flamenco practice.
