ABSTRACT

John has been queuing for ten minutes for his turn to read a page from his graded text. When his turn comes he stumbles over the first, simple word. The teacher has covered all the other clues; the picture, and the other marks on the page. John does not know what to do, or where to look for comfort. Soon all he does is wait for the moment to pass. He does not concentrate more carefully under the teacher’s scrutiny. On the contrary, he becomes more flustered by not being able to guess what the teacher wants him to do.
