ABSTRACT

We never stop learning to read. The skill of unravelling a text or a tax form is only one level of reading. The abilities to understand the implications of the text, and to understand its style and meaning, constitute the true art of reading. The awareness of the symbolic value of marks on the page is soon transformed into the knowledge of what such marks signify, so that reading is not just reading the words, but reading through them. The fluent reader is no longer conscious of the act of reading. Learning to read is not an end in itself, but the beginning of the true skill of reading.
