ABSTRACT
As the world's needs for housing, transportation and industry increase, the consumption of concrete products is expected to increase correspondingly. At the same time, prudent management of energy and natural resources demands ever high levels of performance. Although Portland cement concrete is one of the most remarkable and versatile construction materials, a clear need is perceived for the improvement of properties such as strength, toughness, ductility and durability. One valid approach is to improve the concrete itself; another is to combine technologies in order to make new composites based on cement.
