ABSTRACT

For a mature dry paste with a water/cement ratio of 0·5, Auskem & Hom [3.10) have shown that the volume of capillary porosity is about 0·25 cm3/g. The additional porosity, called 'gel' porosity, is finer than the capillary one and may be present in mature pastes to the extent of about 0·1 cm3 /g. Thus the total cement porosity can be about 0·35 cm3/g. If all these pores become filled upon monomer impregnation, a weight loading of 6-7% is calculated. Because of compositional variations most normal concretes indicate polymer weight loadings of between 5 and 8% [3.10).
