ABSTRACT

It has already been emphasised that documents must be read as a whole. Unless drafting is carried out in accordance with a carefully formulated plan it will be difficult to ensure that the various parts of the documents are consistent with one another and to avoid ambiguities and discrepancies arising from interactions and overlapping between clauses in different parts of the documents and between the various documents making up the contract. Moreover, documents which contain haphazard arrangements of clauses are difficult to read, with the result that some of the provisions may be overlooked at a time when they should be enforced; ease of readability of a document is a most important element in effective administration of the contract by both the Contractor and the Engineer.
