ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the process of harnessing C&IT to support learning as a series of questions to which answers have to be sought. It has emphasized the large and 'up front' time and resource that is likely to be needed. Harnessing C&IT in the context of a new course or department may be easier than when amending existing structures. Learning innovations can encompass replacing existing teaching, designing new courses and enhancing existing courses. It covers the introduction of distance learning courses, and flexible learning and teaching. At a lower level of detail it can cover the introduction or integration of courseware, automated assessment, virtual learning environments, Web-based learning, video conferencing, Web-based conferencing, portals, virtual libraries and self-access learning resources. Academics may have to make a business case for their proposals to secure funds and to win the hearts and minds of colleagues to work collectively to gain support for any additional investments required by the proposed changes.
