ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on understanding the universities and other institutions of higher education that are complex organizations operating in a challenging, dynamic and volatile environment. It aims to inform and help individuals in the early to mid-point of their careers to think about a range of issues central to effective engagement with continuing professional development (CPD). The chapter highlights the need for a systematic, reflective and holistic approach to CPD, which reconciles the interests of different parties and it suggest practical ways in which individuals and institutions might tackle the process of engaging with appropriate activities. CPD is any process or activity that provides added value to the capability of the professional through the increase in knowledge, skills and personal qualities necessary for the appropriate execution of professional and technical duties. CPD is systematic, ongoing, self-directed learning. It is a professional because it is focused on personal competence in a professional role.
