ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers two main aspects of academic management for heads of departments and others managing in academic environments. Professor Martyn Davies provides a rare opportunity to discuss openly the challenges that heads can prepare for, the people who can help, and the losses and gains of the experience. His contribution will be of value to readers in reviewing their own development needs in advance of taking on a managerial role. David Allen is Registrar and Secretary of the University of Birmingham and the Chair of the Association for University Administrators. In the following Allen commentary presents a viewpoint from the centre on what makes for a successful head of department. In a perfect world heads would be groomed for the role several years in advance, through a bespoke programme of professional development covering a wide range of management skills and issues.
