ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a by-product of this accountability, the learning derived from quality assessment. Most academics have in recent years encountered new forms of externally or institutionally-imposed quality assurance. The recently formed Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) is also actively developing a role through the network of 24 subject centres and the Generic Learning and Teaching Centre, which includes drawing on the best practice and pedagogic issues as raised in QAA Subject Overview Reports. Discussions between QAA and ILT and various professional bodies provide further opportunities for connectivity and dovetailing, with localized contextualization achieved through the institutional learning and teaching strategies that will soon become a universal feature of UK higher education. The councils and those responsible for external assessment of quality expect individuals, teams and institutions to learn from assessment and to operate within a climate and culture of enhancement informed by reflection, monitoring and benchmarking of practice.
