ABSTRACT

The moon has been directly sampled in nine separate places. Additional samples have been received indirectly from other sites via exotic rocks found at the Apollo sites and via nine meteorites from the Moon. Lunar samples consist of basalts from the mare regions, breccias from the ejecta of the giant impact craters, and anorthositic materials from the highlands. Numerous soil samples and core tubes provide the opportunity to study the lunar regolith. Lunar samples consist mostly of calcic plagioclase, olivine, orthopyroxene, ilmenite and glass. Only three new minerals were found.
