ABSTRACT

There are three main ways of carrying soil and waste from the house into the drainage system below ground. These are known as the two pipe system, the one pipe system and the single stack system.

The two pipe system is used in many older houses and basically involves the soil stack taking the discharge from the WC or WCs and a separate downpipe taking the waste from baths and basins. This system ensures that sewer gases cannot enter the house, by the provision of ‘breaks’ in the waste pipe at the hopper head and gully, and ventilation of the soil stack.
