ABSTRACT
To understand why there was an ‘explosion’ in the growth of leisure time and facilities for sport and recreation in the 1970s it is important to have some knowledge of the fundamental nature and historical growth of leisure time in this country.1 The part sport as a leisure time activity has played in occupying for many the increasing time at their disposal is the story, in many respects, of the growth of sport in British society since the Industrial Revolution.
