You are a busy teacher and among the many problems confronting you are trouble in the playground and disappointing mathematical performance in the classroom. What do you do? Probably few people would answer ‘Get the children to tackle the first problem and it will help you solve the second’ but that’s exactly what Ann Jones did with her class of 10-yearolds (see Figure 12.1).
