ABSTRACT

The Community Dance and Mime Movement plays a more influential part in British society than is suggested by the Wilding Report or the funding it receives through the Arts Council, local authorities, Regional Arts Associations and private sponsors. At its centre is the Community Dance and Mime Foundation, the only national organization of community arts. This embraces community dance companies and projects as corporate members together with individual dance and mime animateurs. These are defined in the Foundation’s handbook as

professional dance and mime activists working in a community context and who are in receipt of public subsidy… This definition excludes those whose sole function is as a teacher within Statutory Education or anyone whose main function is a performer or choreographer in a dance or mime company.
