ABSTRACT

The philosophy of mathematics of this ideology is social constructivism. The overall epistemology of this position is fallibilist, and conceptual-change orientated, consistent with the philosophy of mathematics. The Relativistic Fallibilist ideology is that of the public educators, who represent a radical reforming tradition, concerned with democracy and social equity. The roots of the public educator and progressive educator traditions are intertwined. The purpose of the public educator mathematics curriculum is to contribute to social change in the direction of greater social justice. The moral values of this position are those of social justice, a synthesis of the separated and connected values. The theory of childhood is that of individuals who are born equal, with equal rights and in general, equal gifts and potential. The theory of society is also dynamic, for it sees that social development and change are needed to achieve social justice for all.
