ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we looked at aspects of the learning environment for the whole class, and the teachers’ role in establishing what the norms might be for the class. However, not all teaching is whole-class teaching, there are many other arrangements for learning. This chapter explores groupwork as a tool in enhancing communication in science lessons. It focuses particularly on the ‘group’ as the mechanism for ensuring that ideas are explored, understood and acted upon. The nature of cooperative and collaborative learning in groups is under scrutiny.
