ABSTRACT

A century ago whole regions of the cortex were being studied to find out whether different parts had the same or different functions. Now minute areas and tiny groups of cells are being investigated to discover whether there is a basic function common to all areas of the brain. Work is advancing rapidly and it is likely that some of the elusive secrets of the hemispheres will be revealed in the next generation. The range of facts available is large but a synthesis of them by some Darwin of the mind is the master stroke necessary. Education will benefit because a sound theory of brain function will be available to help us understand better how we read, how to teach children to read and spell with, for us, greater understanding of their difficulties, how we see shapes, how patterns of sound, sight and touch are analyzed and so on.
