ABSTRACT

It is common amongst those employed in the professions to invest a great deal, in personal terms, in their jobs; work is often the central area of their lives in which they strive for satisfaction and success. It is also a common cultural expectation that professional people will seek upward mobility in terms of prestige and remuneration. However, in the education system the present political and economic situation is such that shortage of resources increasingly constrains and obstructs teachers in their jobs, and falling rolls, amongst other factors, result in insecurity of tenure and decline in promotion opportunities.
