ABSTRACT

In 1952 Eysenck launched his first savage attack against the effectiveness of psychoanalytic therapy. His message was stark and clear and over the last thirty years Eysenck has not really changed his position. Psychoanalysis as a therapy does not work. Indeed, it is worse than useless: it can even be deleterious to patients' recovery. Furthermore, and this was perhaps the most important issue, all this stems from the fact that psychoanalytic therapy is quite unscientific, being untestable, unqualified and rampantly speculative.
