ABSTRACT
The present chapter tries to answer this question, referring to theoretical, empirical, and practical considerations. The next section compares commitment with related psychological constructs and highlights the unique features of commitment. In particular, we will (a) compare the de nitions and measures of commitment and each related construct, (b) briey review theoretical models specifying causal relations between the constructs, and (c) review empirical research comparing these constructs. Specically, as to the latter point, we will use ndings from previous meta-analyses and selected single studies to (a) provide an estimate of the correlation between commitment and each related construct and (b) compare the proles of
correlations of commitment with the correlation proles of each other construct. Research lacunae will be pointed out.
