ABSTRACT

Working with children The use of the language arts in therapeutic capacities with children has received significant attention in the professional literature (e.g., Abell, 1998; Brand, 1987; DeMaria, 1991; Gladding, 1987); however, this is not a new concept. The Junior Poetry Cure: A First-Aid Kit of Verse for the Young of All Ages by Robert Haven Schauffler (1931) was an early and significant contribution to the literature on poetry as prevention for “unwelcome and painful moods, traits, and habits” (p. xiii). Schauffler put together an anthology of poetry for children organized along sev eral themes in a prescriptive format.
