ABSTRACT
The search for hidden treasure to exploit is perhaps one of the oldest of pursuits. Much of it is carried out with the hope of personal gain, some perhaps for scholarship and reputation, some for personal enjoyment, and some to sell illegally for financial gain. The medieval Arab sources show great interest in finding ancient treasure, some for personal gain, but some for the benefit of the state and its people, and some for study purposes.
